The Windows Upgrade Offer is supported in 131 countries which are listed in the markets and other info section. If you live outside these countries, while we do not have any specific details about other offers, we expect that many retailers will offer other promotions when Windows 8 launches.

What edition of Windows 8 will I receive when I upgrade?

Will installation media be available for purchase?
 
A Windows 8 upgrade DVD will be available for purchase for an additional cost. The price will be in addition to the cost of the downloadable software. You may also need to pay for applicable shipping fees, duties and taxes for the DVD. Import duties and taxes may be assessed by the customs organization of the country into which the media is being imported. You should consult your local tax authority if you have any questions. You are responsible for any applicable duties and taxes.

Are Windows 7 touch-enabled PCs compatible with Windows 8?
 
Customers with touch input hardware not specifically designed for Windows 8, but compliant with Windows 7 certification, will experience touch responsiveness at least as good as it was on Windows 7. Since Windows 8 touch requires a higher degree of responsiveness and precision, Windows 8 certified touch PCs will provide a much better experience typing on the onscreen keyboard and using certain controls than on Windows 7 certified PCs. For instance, touchscreens supporting fewer than five simultaneous touch points cannot enable certain Windows 8 features and applications.

Is Windows Media Center included in the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro?
 
For customers who want to install Windows Media Center they will need to purchase the Windows 8 Media Center Pack after upgrading to Windows 8 Pro through Add Windows Feature.

 Will DVD playback work after upgrading to Windows 8?
 
For customers who already have third-party playback software, the Windows Upgrade Assistant will help determine if this software is compatible with Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows 7, you will have the option to keep this software during the upgrade to Windows 8. If your PC is running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you will need to reinstall it. Otherwise, you will need to acquire third-party playback software after the upgrade to play DVDs. Alternatively, you can acquire the Windows 8 Media Center Pack or the Windows 8 Pro Pack post upgrade. Both Packs include Windows Media Center, including the ability to play DVDs.

What is the minimum screen resolution for Windows 8?
 
To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. You also need this screen resolution to run the apps built in with Windows 8. To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

Can I register for Windows Upgrade Offer on my mobile phone?

 
This upgrade offer requires you to use your Windows PC to register. Registration by mobile phone is not available for this offer.

Are all PCs purchased with Windows 7 between June 2, 2012 and January 31, 2013 eligible for the Upgrade Offer?

 
Eligible PCs are new PCs purchased during the promotion period with a valid Windows 7 OEM Certificate of Authenticity and product key for, and preinstalled with:

 
  • Windows 7 Home Basic;
  • Windows 7 Home Premium;
  • Windows 7 Professional; or
  • Windows 7 Ultimate
 
Note: Windows 7 Starter Edition is not eligible for this offer.

 
Is there a limit to the number of promotions that I can register for?

 
The promotional price is limited to one upgrade offer per eligible PC purchased and a maximum limit of five upgrade offers per customer.

Why is there a limit of 5 upgrades per customer?

 
This is a consumer offer on individual PCs and for non-commercial purposes. The installation process and media is designed for individuals. Businesses and other organizations may take advantage of other programs that allow upgrades to Windows 8 through Microsoft volume licensing programs. Will businesses or enterprise be eligible for the offer?

 
The offer is for individual customers like students, home users, and enthusiasts. Organizations can be eligible subject to this maximum limit per organization.

Is the offer available to Full Packaged Product (FPP) / boxed product at retail?

 
No. The offer is only eligible for customers that purchase a qualified new Windows 7 PC preinstalled with Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate versions of Windows 7.

 Do I have to install the Windows 8 upgrade on the eligible PC, or can I install it on another  PC?

 
The upgrade offer is tied to a Windows 7 PC purchased from June 2nd, 2012 through January 31, 2013, but you can choose to redeem the offer and install the upgrade on any compatible Windows-based PC with a qualifying base operating system.

Can all Windows 7 PCs be upgraded to Windows 8?

 
In order to upgrade a PC to Windows 8, the PC must meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 8 and pass required compatibility checks.
